Position Description: Ecological Restoration Engineer/Designer

Geum Environmental Consulting, Inc. is based in Hamilton, Montana.  We provide ecological restoration planning and design services for projects throughout Montana and Idaho.  We complete all phases of restoration projects including site selection, assessment, planning, permitting, design, construction oversight and monitoring. Geum has been in business for more than 20 years and our 11 staff have expertise in restoration ecology, biology, botany, wetlands, water resources, wildlife biology, and GIS/CAD with more than 150 years of combined experience.

This position will support a variety of ecological restoration projects, including some long-term, large-scale remediation and mitigation projects as well as smaller scale projects.  Some examples of Geum’s current active large-scale projects include Upper Clark Fork remediation and restoration near Deer Lodge, Montana; Kootenai River Habitat Restoration Program near Bonners Ferry, Idaho; and environmental and restoration support of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ Water Compact implementation on the Flathead Indian Reservation.  Required skills for this position include:  high level of competency in GIS and AutoCad/Civil 3D; proven strong writing ability outside an academic setting; ability to work long days outdoors in inclement weather in addition to working extended periods in an office setting.  Experience using HEC-RAS or other hydraulic modeling programs is desired.  Other desirable skills include: commercial drone pilot license, ability to identify plants in the region, hydrologic analysis, soil science, surveying, and statistical analysis.  A four-year degree in an engineering field is required, or a Master’s degree in a quantitative natural resources field where substantial use of GIS or CAD was part of your education and training.  This full-time position is based at our Hamilton, Montana office and it is not a remote position.  This is a salaried position and includes benefits such as paid time off, health insurance, and professional development opportunities.  This position may include some project management opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop project design plans suitable for permitting and construction using Civil3D and in some cases GIS.
  • Develop written restoration plans and conceptual drawings based on guidance from project managers.
  • Oversee construction of restoration projects (which may require several days or weeks on project sites), including providing quality control; coordinating with project engineers, designers, and contractors; and coordinating material acquisition and deliverie
  • Participate in field assessments such as wetland delineations, surveying and other site investigations.
  • Develop and implement restoration monitoring plans to evaluate effectiveness of completed projects.
